The church exists to tell people about God and to show the world by our actions what God is like, but really, we supposed to be inviting people into a personal relationship with God--and reminding them they don't have to be perfect to do that.

Sometimes it's hard to find the big-picture, "go thou and do likewise" take-home moral lesson of a Bible story--Which begs the question: Is that the way the Bible, and our faith, are really supposed to work?

In a world that still asks us to sacrifice others or even parts of ourselves for peace, security, or material success, why do we have such a hard time remembering that God stayed Abraham's hand and kept him from sacrificing his own son, Isaac? Or that Jesus said: "Learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice"? In Christ, God is at work saving the world not -through- sacrifice but -from- sacrifice.

What do we do with "Father God"? If we scrap the language, even with the best of intentions, do lose the intimacy? Can we find a way to be pastorally sensitive to the experience of faulty human fathers and still live into our calling as beloved daughters and sons, sisters and brothers of Christ?

We are called to be a "Pentecost-shaped" church, to manifest the grace of God by putting ourselves next to unexpected people and places, as a sign of God's unexpected love for all, even and particularly the "least likely suspects."
Texts: Acts 2:1-21; Psalm 104:24-34, 35b
Original Date: June 12, 2011--Pentecost Sunday
NOTE: The twittering you hear throughout this track is not a problem with your audio. The congregation was given "bird warblers" this Sunday and were invited to blow them anytime the words "Spirit," "bird," "wind," and the like occurred in the service, to remind us of the interrupting power of the Holy Spirit.
